Dental Health Week 2023: Mind, Body, Mouth

It’s Dental Health Week!
Dental Health Week is an annual oral health campaign led by the Australian Dental Association (ADA). Dental Outreach joins the ADA to encourage Australians of all ages to care for their teeth and gums, so they can keep a healthy smile and body for life!
This year, we focus on the mouth-to-body connection. Heart Disease, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s Disease, Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes, Lung Conditions, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease – all stem from the state of your oral health.
Alzheimer’s Disease
Bacteria from severe gum disease has been found in brain plaques that have led to the development of Alzheimer’s disease and a decline in memory.
Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes
Bacterial changes from gum disease can spread to the placenta leading to possible preterm delivery, pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure) or low birth weight.
Lung Conditions
Bacteria from the mouth can be inhaled into the lungs, with the bad bacteria from gum disease leading to worsened conditions in the lung.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
There is early evidence showing that both diseases make one another worse due to increasing the body’s total inflammation and bacteria from the mouth can travel to the gut which can worsen any gut issues.
Practising good oral hygiene is vital to your overall health and well-being. XXX reminds everyone to brush and floss twice a day, eat fewer sugary foods, and visit the dentist for a regular dental check-up to avoid serious health diseases or any costly treatment.
